Yad Vashem was established on August 19,1953 by Israeli law- the martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Act- as a memorial to those Jews who were victims of what has become known as the Holocaust. This same law also mandates that "a lace and name" be given to non-Jews who acted to save their fellow human beings. Consequently, on a Jerusalem hillside at Ya Vashem, there now stand well over 700 trees planted in honor of these Christians along the Avenue of the Righteous.
